The Varsity Volleyball Team headed to their first Tournament of the year hosted by San Gabriel. Friday night the Oilers went 2-1 beating Garey and El Camino Real but falling to Burbank in 3 sets. The Oilers would finish 2nd in there pool and qualify for the Gold Division.
On Saturday the Oilers would play a solid Crescenta Valley squad and give them a run for their money. The Oilers came out strong and would beat the Falcons (25-21). In the second game the Falcons played strong and would beat the Oilers (19-25). The Oilers would fight but would eventually lose a close third game (14-16). The Oilers had there chances but couldn’t finish. That loss would take the sails out of the Oilers and the team would drop the other remainding games to Arcadia and Brentwood both in 3 games. The Oilers who competed well against Burbank and the eventual Gold Tournament Champion Crescenta Valley have shown they have the potential to play with some good teams. There lack of closing out Arcadia and Brentwood are calls for concern that they are not focused enough to play hard on a consistent basis.
This week will round out the preseason before they start league against Bell Gardens next Thursday, March 27th. This week the Oilers play at home on Tuesday, March 18 against Santa Fe who is ranked in Division 4. On Friday, March 21st the Oilers will host a good Temple City Team.
The question will be will the rollercoaster continue or will the Oilers become a more consistent team over the next week. The Oilers record falls this weekend to (3-5) overall.
The Junior Varsity traveled to Burbank to play in the Burroughs Tournament. The Oilers would compete and play strong and split with Crespi, Alemany, and Eagle Rock to reach the Gold Division on Saturday. The Oilers would be short handed on Saturday and would lose their matches but the reserves stepped up and played hard to end the weekend.
