Brute California Rumble – at Bishop Amat Memorial High
A year ago, Junior, Ernie Espinoza was the alternate at 106lbs for the Montebello High wrestling team. This year he has established himself as one of the leaders for the Oilers, as he was the lone tournament winner at the Brute Classic. Montebello also had three additional wrestlers advance to the finals: Jesus Langaria (132lbs.), Josh Abarca (182lbs.) and Ben Monzon in the 220-pound weight class. With nine place winners in the tournament, Montebello was crowned the team champions with 166 points.
Host school and team runner-up, Bishop Amat, finished with 162points and with the most place winners in the tournament by any school. State qualifier, Sidney Flores picked up the lower weights Most Outstanding Wrestler Award, as he pinned all four opponents he faced in the tournament.
